The Downtown: On the Go! Transportation Partnership
The Downtown: On the Go! Transportation Partnership is composed of executive leadership drawn from the public and private sectors working together to increase alternative mode commuting in the Downtown from 24% to 35% by 2030. Downtown’s private sector stakeholders have created a meaningful and focused partnership with the City of Tacoma and Pierce Transit to coordinate this new direction.
History of the Partnership:
In the summer of 2008, the City of Tacoma, Pierce Transit, and the Tacoma Chamber hosted three transportation forums for downtown business executives. The forums were facilitated by local and regional transportation experts. As a result of these sessions, the business community overwhelmingly determined that it was ready to take action. As we result, the Downtown: On the Go! Transportation Partnership was formed.
The Partnership held a series of six meetings between January and June 2009, addressing transit routes, capacity, and programs; bicycling/walking infrastructure and amenities; carsharing; and telework. Members agreed in June 2009 to continue working to establish long-term funding and organization plans. Between June and October of 2009, funding was sought to continue the Partnership in the short-term, and additional partners representing a more diverse sampling of organizations were added to the Partnership. In October 2009, the Partnership will reconvene to begin the process of creating the long-term funding and organization plans, as well as determine the form and function of this group.
